THE ECLIPSE

( Meher Baba Explains )


The eclipse is purely an astronomical phenomenon
and needs no explanation.
_
There is, however, a germ of spiritual truth
behind the grotesquely colorful imagery of gods and demons,
their squabbles and jealousies for the nectar of immortality,
all ingeniously concocted by the priestclass to flabbergast
the superstitious masses and incidentally to fleece them.

The spiritual aspect of the question is this:
The whole universe, known and unknown, has come out of
a point in the microcosm which may be called
the
Creation Point.
_
Simultaneously with this emanation
two processes come into play — evolution and production.
_
The differences between the two processes
are rather significant and must be clearly understood.
The process of production is dependent on
the process of evolution in sequence of causation,
but not in the sequence of time.
_
Evolution depends on the Creation Point for cause,
but production is dependent on evolution.
Evolution connotes spiritual progress
and production signifies material
growth and change, organic and inorganic.

It is a scientifically acknowledged fact
that the stellar regions, planets and stars,
do exert an influence on the life and activity
of this planet — the earth.

And since this earth of ours
has the highest evolved organic life,
the human happens to be the nearest
to the spiritual plane;
_
the phenomenon of eclipse
does indirectly affect the world spiritually.

The Rishis of old knew all too well
the astronomical basis and the spiritual
influence of such a heavenly occurrence.
_
Looking at the average mentality
of the masses of their time,
the Rishis could do no better than issue cut-and-dried
instructions as to prayers, penance and austerities,
investing the whole affair with a religious importance
rather than give a rational and spiritual elucidation.

In course of time
the religious "do's and don'ts" of the wise Rishis
were very cleverly woven round by self-seeking priests,
with a picturesque and awe-inspiring legend
of the gods, demons, nectar, the moon in travail
and its subsequent Moksha (freedom) for purposes
all too patent to thinking minds.
_
Such legendary superstitions persist and flourish
with ignorance and illiteracy;
but now people are outgrowing
such childish beliefs.

There is, however, no denying the fact
that a few prayers and ordeals undergone
with keen concentration,
concurrently with the eclipse of the sun or moon,
do result in great spiritual benefit
to the individual concerned.

AN OLD STORY

Many many years ago, Moses needed to talk with the lord,so he started up the trail that led to the summit of Mt. Sinai. On his journey he came upon an old drunk sitting by the side of the trail. Now, this old drunk was "three sheets to the wind" and he saw Moses walking and he cried out in a loud voice "Hey Moses where ya going?" and Moses said "To talk with the lord" and the drunk said "Hey, tell God 'hey' for me" and Moses shook his head at the old drunk and said "I will brother, I will." Well, a little farther up the path, Moses came upon a priest. The priest was sitting in all his fine regalia, very proper, very proud and a little condescending and he saw brother Moses coming up the path and he said to Moses, "Moses where goeth thou?" and Moses said "To talk with the Lord" and the grand priest said "Tell the Lord that I'm keeping his covenant and I will await with great anticipation the rewards of heaven" and Moses said "I will."

Well, Moses gets to the top of Mt. Sinai and toward the end of his visit he mentions coming across the drunk and the priest and the Lord says "I am aware of both" and Moses said "but father what is to become of them?" and God said "The drunk is headed for Hell and the priest for Heaven" and Moses says "Yes Lord."

Well coming down from Mt. Sinai Moses walks by the priest and the priest says "Did you give God the message?" and Moses says "Yes" and then the grand priest says "It shall be." Well, down the trail a bit he sees the drunk still three sheets to the wind and the drunk sees Moses and he takes another drink and calls out "Hey Moses did you tell God 'hey' for me?" and Moses says, "Oh yes brother and God says you're headed for Hell." Well, the drunk heard none of this, he leapt up and did a little jig, laughed, had another swig of booze and just kept dancing and laughing and crying out "The Lord actually thought of me!" Well, Moses finally grabbed the drunk and said "But the Lord said you're bound for Hell" and the drunk said "Let's have a drink, the Lord remembered me!" Well, Moses went on.
_
Many months later the Lord called Moses to Sinai and on his walk to the summit Moses came by where the drunk had been and all he saw was a discarded liquor flask; the drunk was nowhere to be seen. And a little farther up where the priest sat, the place was also abandoned. Well, Moses went up to the summit and after finishing his business with God, Moses matter of factly said, "Lord, whatever happened to the priest and the drunkard?" and the Lord said "Why Moses they're both dead." and Moses said "But Lord what happened to them?" The Lord said, "Why, the drunk is in Paradise and the priest is in Hell!" Moses said "But Lord, how can that be?" And the Lord said "The priest thought he'd make a deal. I DO NOT MAKE DEALS! and the simple drunk, he rejoiced just at being remembered. He expected absolutely nothing, he could have cared less about Heaven or Hell, he was happy at just being remembered and the nothing for the drunk became the everything."

Key to the Pilgrim's Progress

GURU'S GRACE
_
The true path to God lies in pure spirituality.
The tip of the path's top is as sharp as a razor,
As told in the upanishads and by the Christ,
That presents, to the fickle, a hidden danger.
_
Walking on it requires constant remembrance,
Namdev, Nanak and sants named it as "simran".
Krishna stated " yagnaanaam Japa Yagnosmi",
Giving us, for Kali Yuga, His remembrance plan.
_
Obstacles to spirituality rises from one's ego,
And its offshoots, Passion, Pride and Prejudice,
Miserliness, Dishonesty, hatred and jealousy,
Selfishness, Intolerance, anger and malice.
_
The only way to avoid, prevent or surmount
These obstacles, is to seek spiritual guidance,
Which only a true spiritual teacher can give.
"Pariprashnena sevayaa" offers this chance.
_
Religions, original clear inspiration sources,
Their teachings, with passing time corrupted,
Became obstacles to man's spiritual endeavor,
With dogmas, rituals and taboos that vitiated.
_
True teachers of the masses languished, sidelined,
Rejected as uncouth, unlearned and untrained:
Money, political leanings, influence, gained sway,
Aam Aadmi remained perplexed and dismayed.
_
The masses needed true spiritual teachers
Full of humility, charity, opinions broad,
Who held the divine above personal desires,
Who, unselfishly, turned them over to God.
_
Such true teachers are found even today:
They bring to all contentment and peace,
Forgiveness, calmness, love and humility,
Personal integrity and emotional release.
_
These benefits reassure the lonesome seeker
To strive further in the path fully inspired,
Till the time when the benevolent teacher
Lets him go alone with the wisdom acquired.
_
Most spiritual teachers can bring the seeker
To reach the chosen path, to steady his soul,
To turn way from distracting preoccupations
Move on to spirituality and its intended goal.
_
But they cannot lead the seeker still further,
To go higher in station, crossing stages within:
This is the work of the master who has crossed
These stages and can show him the way to win.
_
Masters are found, stationed at various levels
Of spiritual perfection, to which they can pull
The seeker: but beyond their level, they cannot
Lift the proficient seeker in spite of their skill.
_
For the seeker to reach spiritual perfection,
By a 7th station master, he must be blessed:
This touch of the able perfect master alone
Can bring completion to the seeker's quest.
_
Lesser masters show the way to the higher one
Or he, himself, will decide seek the seeker out.
Often, a period of intense waiting is required
A"viraha", before this miracle can come about.
_
Proximity is required to lift up the seeker:
For all the lesser masters distance is a bar.
The perfect master's will, raises the seeker,
Even though the seeker is found living afar.
_

_At the end of each era the Avathar comes.
Perfect masters hand over authority to Him.
As both God and Guru, on earth, he plays,
Cleansing spirituality, corrupt to the brim.
_
Destroying obstacles to spirituality's growth,
Obstacles, internal and external, that press,
He sets all religious orders on an even keel,
Makes way for the seekers' spiritual progress.
_
A perfect master may make one like himself.
But not the Avathar when he comes to play,
He lifts to perfection as many as he chooses
To guide the world after he has passed away.
_
He can induces a Pan-religious Reformation,
Bringing on a World Religious Renaissance,
Clearing the way for His New Spiritual Era,
A thousand year rule that suits God's plan !

At about 2:30 a.m. today, I got up from my bed, and then went to the bathroom.
When I came back, I could not sleep.
I was telling Baba,
"Please let me sleep."

Immediately, I found that
He was knocking at my heart.

He said,
_
"O ignorant one! You want to sleep?
How long will you sleep the sleep of ignorance?
The Divine Sun shines continuously,
yet you live in the house of ignorance,
which has thirteen houses within itself.
_
Each house has a separate door.
This is the reason you cannot see the glory of the
Divine Sun.
It shines continuously, without a break.

But how can you see it,
unless you open the door of each house and come out?
Only then can you see the light of the Divine Sun.
Once you see this light, you will have longing,
like a fish has when she is out of water.
You will long and long to become one with the Sun.

"You have already crossed or opened the first six doors,
and you are at the seventh door.

"When you come to the seventh door,
you get full gross consciousness,
but this is only the seventh reflection of the Divine Sun.
_
When you are in the stone form or kingdom,
you have passed through seven doors (the planes) of evolution unconsciously,
and now you are at the first door of involution.
Evolution of consciousness has begun,
and from the eighth door, the involution of consciousness starts.

Now you see the darkness of the seventh door.
The sun which you see is the seventh reflection of the
Divine Sun.
Though it is darkness, you think that it is light.
But it is not light. It is the darkness of ignorance.

"When I come down on earth,
My work is to cut a kerf* on the seventh door.
When this is done, I drop My physical body.
I cut that kerf, but a piece still remains there.

"There are some who are very near the kerf.
Still, they can't see the light
because a piece of the kerf has not been removed.
But they are attracted towards the light.
_
There are others at a great distance from that kerf.
They look to the other side, towards darkness,
and darkness also appears to them as light --
as in the gross world, there is night and day.
They just go fast towards darkness.
_
When My Universal Manifestation takes place,
the piece of the seventh door will fall down.
_
There will be a total turnabout towards the Sun,
and they will see the light,
which will be from the Subtle World.

"Still,
one has to pass through six more doors
to reach the seventh door
(or in this case, 'seventh' means 'fourteenth').
_
Already you have passed through seven doors;
six more doors you have to pass through.
These doors are in the inner world --
the Subtle World and Mental World.
[Bhau’s note: seven for evolution and seven for involution.]

"There are four doors in the Subtle World,
and two doors in the mental world.
So when that piece of the kerf comes out,
humanity will see the darkness of the Subtle World, in the form of light,
which is also darkness. But it is a finer darkness.
This light will become very, very bright --
because it is the light of energy, which is in the Subtle World.

"When My Universal Manifestation takes place,
people will see the light of the subtle world,
though it is still a finer darkness.
_
Just imagine, what will be the effect?
The effect will be a total about-turn towards this light.
So humanity -- which goes towards darkness,
and has no attraction towards finer darkness, or light --
will be attracted towards finer darkness, or light.
It shows that the attraction towards the darkness of the material world
will be lessened.
The awareness of this light from the Subtle World
will be more.
Attachment towards the darkness of the material world
will be lessened to a great extent.

"Because of this,
there will be peace.
People will not go about fulfilling their low desires.
They will be less and less attracted to these desires
and more and more attracted to this light,
which they will see when the piece from the seventh door
falls down.

"Those who are near the door, where the kerf is cut,
will have a longing to open that door and enter into the Subtle World.
Their longing will go on increasing,
and they will pass through one door after another --
four doors of the Subtle World,
and enter into the Mental World, which has two planes.
When they enter into the second plane of the Mental World,
they will have the longing for the union with God.
_
This longing will be like that of a fish out of water.
Then, one day, they will become
one with the Divine Sun.

"Do you realize how difficult it is for Me
to cut a kerf in the seventh door?
Because it is My duty, I come down on earth for that purpose.
When I do this work,
all seven kingdoms of evolution of consciousness are affected by My work.

"What is My universal push?

"My universal push
is to give a push to the piece of the kerf in the seventh door,
so that it may fall down, and there will be an about-turn
towards the light by all kingdoms of consciousness.

"Now, you understand what my
Universal Manifestation
is.
But it is not a matter of understanding.
One has to experience it.

"I take My circle members blindfolded,
so they don't know anything that happens in the inner path
of the Subtle World and the Mental World.
When they reach the seventh plane,
that means they pass through the six inner doors,
and reach the seventh.
Then can they not only see,
but they become one with the
Divine Sun.

"Whatever you see in the Gross World
is nothing but the darkness of ignorance,
even the sun which you see,
the sun which gives you light.
This light is nothing but the seventh reflection of the
Divine Sun.
Therefore, this is the seventh reflection
of the darkness of ignorance.

"This is Illusion.
You always want to know, what is Illusion?
Illusion is that which makes you think of darkness as light.

"How to get out of this Illusion?
You need not get out of it, because it is the shadow of ignorance.
You have to know that it is a shadow of ignorance.
When you experience and know this, then
you are not affected by that shadow of ignorance.

"I told you about this when I was dictating the book,
THE NOTHING AND THE EVERYTHING,
to you.
_
At that time, I had given you some points.
Today, I am making it clear to you in
order to understand it.
_
But know well, even if you understand,
you will not experience it.
In order to experience it,
My Grace is required.
And I will give that Grace.
_
It is My work,
and for that purpose I have come down.
I prepare you all, so that you may become worthy of that Grace.

"You are all very fortunate
that you have received the opportunity to become
My
Mandali.
You think that you have no experiences.
How can you have any experiences
when you are blindfolded?
I don't want you to have any experiences,
because the real experience is to unite with God.
All experiences have no value, even when you are in the planes.
That also is the experience of Illusion, though it is a finer illusion.
_
So I keep
my
Mandali members
away from this illusory experience.
_
I give them
Real experience.

"No one should even long for finer illusory experiences.
You will remain absorbed in those experiences
and cannot proceed further unless
a
Perfect Master
or the
Avatar
gives you a push.
This is the reason I keep you all blindfolded."

I think that this
Awakening is finished,
because I did not hear (feel) anything afterwards.
And then I slept.
_
But then, later this morning, when I was taking a walk,
yet another message came ...

* Bhau said he had heard this word, , "kerf," from Baba.
We thought he had said "curve," and he gestured against the wall,
as if outlining a circle with his finger.
He called for a dictionary, saying that it wasn't "curve."
We were looking under "c" and didn't find it.
He said just to use "circle."
But just then Glenn Magrini walked into the office,
and he knew the word "kerf" from carpentry!
The word was not found in that dictionary,
but Bhau called for two more dictionaries,
and the third listed "kerf," with a definition
which clarified the image beautifully -- "a wedge-shaped notch made with an axe in the side of a tree, so that the tree will fall."
Bhau kept indicating that it was like a circle that was cut,
but the piece remained --
until the push came.
He had said at first to use the word "circle,"
and then we found the definition.
